On Saturday April 16th, 2022 I attended the Repairing Nature Episode 3 event by the Pratt Institute Gallery in Manhattan. This event was particularly interesting because it shed light on human destruction and how we could repair it by using art to symbolize it. This event was very interesting because it is a problem that all of us have to face and using art to inspire action. One particular piece caught my eye. The piece called "Moby Debris" 2019 by Christy Rupp. In his artwork he uses intertwined food, politics, and ecology that have been made a mess (Rupp 2019). The artwork look like small micro plankton but trash at the same time. It symbolized life made out of plastics fighting for survival. Christ did an amazing job depicting how our society has flaws and used this art to express it.

The second artist that inspired me was Victoria Vesna's "Noise Aquarium". This piece was particularly interesting because it made me thing of dolphins. I grew up surfing all my life and recently saw a Dolphin pod and thought about all the man made noises in the water such as boats. I would assume her aquarium is what animals see or feel like when humans pass by. According to the guardian,
"Noise emanating from passing ships may disturb animals such as killer whales and dolphins far more than previously thought, with new research showing that the animals' communication and ability to find prey could be hampered by the underwater din" (Milman 2016). I believe this is what Victoria was trying to depict in her piece. |

The next artist I? thought was insanely cool was Oliver Laric's "Hundemensch" 2018. This piece reminded me of the FooDog, a spiritual animal in ancient Chinese culture. In his art he captured a normal dog but it had mutations which can be see today in animals because we are destroying the environment. This is actually true, "Air pollution can cause DNA mutations in the sperm of mice reared in an industrial city, researchers have found" (Ledford 2008). |
